Some of you might remember about 5 years ago the mayor of naas made a statement saying he didn't like dealing with Africans as a local councillor because he found them to be both aggressive, and demanding. On Wednesday night, almost 1,000 people attended a public meeting on Government proposals to use the former Connemara Gateway Hotel to house asylum seekers in the near future.
The meeting was attended by a number of local politicians including Government chief whip Sean Kyne, Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Mr Grealish.
While the meeting was intended to give the public information on what was happening, several sources said it quickly descended into deeply controversial views on immigration.
Ms Connolly repeatedly spoke out against the remarks throughout the meeting.
However, several sources confirmed Mr Grealish instead said Ireland is a "Christian" country, should prioritise "good Christian families" and claimed most African asylum seekers are in reality economic migrants "sponging" off the system.

I already emailed me Grealish and thanked him for his ability to tell the truth in the face of such adversity as the immigrant council of Ireland, and the Irish refugee council, the Galway anti rasism brigade (who actually attended the meeting ) I advised him of the faith that bestowed the former mayor of Naas some years agofor making similar comments but assured him of my continued support.of course he will also meet with opposition from the journal rag bo doubt

The Immigrant Council has said comments by Independent TD Noel Grealish that €10 billion has been sent abroad over the last eight years are "shameful".
The council said that remittances are an essential part of migration and part of the Irish experience for generations.
Mr Grealish's comments were branded as "racist" after he made the remarks in the Dáil.
The Galway West TD told the Dáil that the money has been sent to countries such as Poland, Nigeria, the UK and France.
He asked if Revenue or the Department of Finance had any way of tracking where this money was coming from.

A great mate of mine works for the fraud squad. He told at the moment, there is a huge number of taxi drivers under investigation. He did not say if they were Irish foreign, or both. Just that the number has dramatically shot up in recent times

To be fair to the Nigerians a lot of them tend to work for their money.... often taking jobs very few folk want such as driving taxis, buses, luaseyes, cleaning, security, etc...
As DM notes, a lot of them drive taxis and, obviously, a lot more do security. These sectors are traditionally very poor contributors to the exchequer so it seems fair to question whether they are paying appropriate tax on the money they send home. As Leo noted, us Irish sent home large fortunes in used notes over the years and I think we can be pretty sure a lot of that was from into the hand work and/or other corrupt activities such as welfare fraud. However, these days there is a lot more traceability, cash in an envelope is unlikely to be the first choice.
Outfits like Western Union, Banks, etc ought to monitored closely... I know there are rules for reporting cash transactions over €10,000 but what about those transactions that are slightly under the limit or multiple transactions, disguised or otherwise, which collectively exceed the threshold?
The so-called gig economy ought to come under more scrutiny. The faceless bureaucrats in Brussels ought to make our Govt introduce withholding tax for firms like Airbnb, Free Now, Uber, etc... I have been told, for example, that Free Now's top driver had takings of €133,000 last year in respect of base jobs alone. This is serious money, not just a few nixers that can be reasonably overlooked. Similarly, a withholding tax regime within the security trade would undoubtedly benefit the exchequer. I know a good few soldiers who done door work over the years on a cash in hand basis, in fact there was a general acceptance that it wouldn't be worth their while giving up their weekends if they had to pay income tax on the relevant remuneration.
However, it's important not to get carried away and tar all immigrants with the same brush. Don't forget many of those who don't hold PSV or PSA licences are working for less than minimum wage*.

The thing here is slightly more complicated in that so many indigenous Irish have been proven to be the source of scamming....the fraud squad will throw the odd "foreigner" into the mix to assuage the fears of the inflamed "bona fide" driver baying for blood.

Remains to be seen, but our propensity for self-indulgently scoffing when it comes to blatant fraud seems to have only developed recently with the mere mention of the "foreigners"..........we appear to have totally ignored the biggest scam ever carried out on a recently established state such as ours....namely the "father unknown" clause on our birth certs which, hypothetically and allegedly speaking, may have defrauded the Irish tax-payer of more than 3 billion since 1986.........none of which can be attributed to anyone other than the Micks and Conceptas of this world.

I just say it as I see it, Octy. Economic migrants are a necessity for our economy to grow. People who do menial jobs generally do them so their childers don't have to so the relevant jobs need to be done by a lower working class going forward i.e. immigrants. First generation immigrants are no different in that regard, many of their childers will get good educations and pursue professional careers. UK farmers are already looking out their windows at fields full of crops with nobody to pick them... and that's before brexit.

Religious fundementalism of one kind or another has been around since the beginning of time but gets watered down as civilized societies evolve. We've no shortage of "no go ghettos" to tackle right now without worrying about those that may or may not develop going forward. I was dragged up in Coolock, for example... as a man said to me recently, you'd want a bullet proof 4x4 to bring kids to schools in that area these days... and there's areas of West Dublin (Tallaght) that Tesco and Dominos Pizza won't go into... these are all home grown problems, brought about by a lack of parental control, a booming drugs trade and zero Garda intervention.

I've used taxis from unofficial stands up above in Dublin in the 1980s and worked them in the 1990s, the immigrants didn't come into the trade until after entry liberalisation in 2000. When I worked unofficial stands in Swords after entry liberalisation there were only one or two immigrants using them, they certainly had no involvement in the establishment of the same. Your assertions to the contrary are nothing more than scaremongering aimed at storing up racial hatred within the trade. The Ashbourne incident was well covered in the media. Contrary to your speculation it was nothing more than a bit of rivalry between Swords and Ashbourne schools that got a bit out of hand. If you have documentary evidence to the contrary please post it.

I heard of them descending on Portmarnock, Raheny, Malahide, Lusk and Rush - essentially anywhere they believed they could get away with it - on different occasions. They came from all over the place drawn by a common interest in "Gangster Rap" music. The lads in Lusk tracked down the ring leader a few years ago and one was subsequently burnt out of his gaff in Tyrelstown but rehoused in a brand new gaff in Clonee. The last I heard of them was over a year ago when one of them was stabbed by accident while filming a music video on a public train, I think that was in or around Harmonstown. Of course that sort of behaviour can't be tolerated, Dublin desperately needs a police force focused on law enforcement as is evident in the general level of anti-social behaviour and drug dealing in the city and suburbs.
We have housed a huge number of asylum seekers so it is inevitable that a small number will become involved in some kind of criminal activity, that's inherent throughout the population. Those of us that work up above in Dublin, for example, know that prostitution is now largely controlled by Romanian and other Eastern European gangs, something that has put many of our home grown fat, ugly prostitutes out of work and resulted in armed combat on the streets of our capital city. I've also heard suggestions that the Kinahan OCG are turning to Eastern European immigrants to manage drug distribution on our streets, having killed of or otherwise sidelined distributors once associated with the Hutch OCG. Again, we desperately need a police force focused on enforcement of the law.
We shouldn't, however, let our blind eye approach to law enforcement detract from the positive elements of multiculturisation. We have, in our own trade for example, given men back the freedom to work, earn money, feed and educate their families within relatively civilised communities. What could be more rewarding? Outside of our trade we have men to pick, pack and distribute our fruit and veg. We have men to drive our buses, luaseyes, darts, trains, etc. We have men to drive the big lorries that transport all sorts of goods. We have men and women to work in our hospitals, hospices, care centres, etc. We have men to build our houses, schools, hospitals, etc. We have men to clean and repair our cars, offices, houses, schools, hospitals, etc... etc, etc...

I got help from me family ken and a roof an bed ....not all have that that ...ther but for the grace of god an all that....

Granted, You and Me got through it Octy and it was not an easy path to take and there were struggles along the way, as also did DM, we all battled hard/worked hard and brought ourselves forward, not like the Scum on the street today whose only interest is in their next drink or fix, the Help is out there fer them, but because Irish society is so leniant, they couldn't be bothered with it !

I did get a lot of assistance Octy and I have never pretended otherwise but not from family, that was very limited.
The one man who went over and above and most likely saved me was actually a Taxi base owner and renter.
All I had to do was work, and I did, and he greased all the wheels fer me.
The scum on the street that I refer to don't want to work, then don't want help, they just want to drink and use and get paid and fed by the state to do it !

Rumour I heard was that it was Dublin inner city door sleepers that were suggested/threatened. Still, I doubt the locals would be any more (or less, as the case may be) enthusiastic about Galway, Cork, Limerick or Waterford door sleepers. Folk love to complain about the homeless not being housed but very few will want to house them in their own communities, particularly not blocks of flats full of them.

One you might know, DM... What's the story with the accommodation centre on Greencastle Road - where the Chinese sewing factory used to be? I've got a few jobs from Free Now there covering several nationalities. Is it meant to be for the homeless or what? I've done runs from local housing schemes to it and vice versa and a couple of runs to the direct provision centre in St. Margarets... all cash jobs. Always strikes me as a bit Irish that the homeless can take taxis to and from their "shelters" 7 days a week while hard working men often have to travel to and from work by public bus.
