I did state before that your bill would prob come in around the 2k mark fer 4 days in with 1 endoscope procedure, hopefully it will be less.

Emergency Dept is free if you turn up with a Doctor's note.  Otherwise, it's €100.  Since Apr 2023, there's no charge for public patients staying in hospital while you're been treated by a consultant.  Private patients pay!

As I read it, as long as you turned up at ED with a doctor's note or in the back of an ambulance, you'll pay nothing.  Worst case scenario, you pay €100 tops as a public patient.  I'm no expert so I could be wrong.



A few years ago, hospitals were trying to make extra money by grabbing people in the ED and asking them if they had health insurance.  If they said 'yes', they got upgraded on the computer system for a private bed etc even if none was available.  They definitely didn't skip the ED queue and mostly they got nothing extra when they went on a ward because of overcrowding.  But the insurance company got a huge bill.  Pretty scummy behaviour, if you ask me.  Maybe that's why the new rules were brought in?

I must be talking to meself when I said ....I use to know this stuff .I think ?if you went to Emergency without a Doctors note you might get charged a ton .The daily rate is gone and any work you had done is covered by your PRSI as long as you attended a Public Hospital .There is even a chance the Ton for emergency visit can be wiped out if you were admitted .So your Bill should be no more than a Ton .Apply for a Full medical Card on the Grounds of low pay and ongoing health issues .They might refuse you but give you a Doctor Visit Card .Think you must apply for Full Medical Card to be Considered for Doc Only .
