https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/tens-of-thousands-to-be-hit-with-new-599-monthly-charge-from-eir-for-access-to-email-38924417.html .

Eir is to begin charging tens of thousands of people and organisations €5.99 per month for its Eircom.net email service, which has been free for almost 20 years.

From March 31, Eircom.net account holders who don't pay won't be able to open individual email messages.

If they don't pay within two months, their email account will be deleted.

Eir are perfectly right.I remember when I was in eircom.loads of times it happened that I wouldbe called out to a fault.when id get there, more often then not id establish that the fault was in a router box belonging to a private provider, and there was nothing we could do because it wasnt down to us.it meant the customer got away with bringing us out to a fault that had nothing to do with us,the private provider got away with eircom having to establish this, and all eircom was allowed to charge was 1 penny aa a nominal fee for bringing us out.then we were instructed to issue chargable forms with a fee of 40 euro attached if we were brought out to a fault not of our making the comreg agreed to this.it was the only way eircom could recoup some money, and it willsoon made a lot of companies call their private provider before calling us.for far to long eircom has had to bear the brunt of comregs unfair rules

Eir is fast becoming obsolete. Siro (ESB/Vodafone) own the new broadband/telecoms infrastructure.

Siro is the only one with Gigabit in my area... once that comes to an area it's a no-brainer. Have Eir even started upgrading to Gigabit yet or are they just going to resell Siro like everybody else?

Remember when everyone thought they were going to make a killing on the Telecom Eireann shares... then the new CEO came from the United States of America and resigned before small break on day one?

Rat eir is the incumbent operator.everything that happens in the industry must go through the eir network, including the DUG direct underground cable,or dropwire off the pole .eir call the shots

I don't think that applies to Siro. That was rolled out using the ESB network. When I got it installed they put a brand new cable into the gaff separate from the old Eir one that's still there.

I think Virgin may have their own infrastructure too, they were digging the roads up around the same time as ESB/Siro... much to my annoyance, why they can't all use the same holes is beyond me.

Dare I suggest you might be behind the times a bit, DM?

https://siro.ie/about-us/

How We Build the SIRO Network

SIRO is deployed on ESB’s existing overhead and underground infrastructure, ensuring a fast and cost-efficient roll-out to every county in Ireland.

SIRO’s key differentiator is that it is a custom-built 100% fibre optic service , with no copper connection at any point in the network, making it faster and more reliable than the traditional broadband infrastructure in Ireland.

Virgin have all their own cables, so can operate without Eir/Eircom/Telecom Eireann/Post & Telecoms cables.
Don’t need exchanges as it’s all fiber optics, and VOIP is the way they use their phone system.
Mad thing is with Virgin, our landline number starts with 555  ??? ???

Vikk virgin always allocate a new number when you apply for their services.you can hang on to your old number upon request.it is just a matter of then requesting eir to enable your existing number on MDF (main distrabution frame ) on a new L I ,and providing service

I kept my old number with Vodafone on the Siro network. Like Vic says the telephone is VOIP so probably not directly connected to the exchange at all. They tell you it's not suitable if your alarm monitoring service requires a landline, that's the only downside. However, I have tested an autodialler connected to my own alarm and it worked fine... so not sure why.
