A son of former President and Taoiseach Éamon de Valera facilitated illegal adoptions in the 1950s and 1960s, according to a new documentary.

Professor Éamon de Valera Jr is said to have helped arrange for four children to be illegally adopted into the same house.

Evidence has also emerged showing he arranged antenatal appointments for a woman who was not pregnant.

This allowed her to pretend the child she was illegally adopting was hers.

Prof De Valera is one of three doctors named in a documentary being broadcast tonight who are alleged to have facilitated such adoptions.

The programme, RTÉ Investigates: Ireland’s Illegal Adoptions, also details how the Sisters of Charity, who ran the infamous St Patrick’s Guild Adoption Society, pursued a birth mother for maintenance payments for her daughter, long after she had actually been adopted.

Among documents obtained by one woman who was illegally adopted, Dubliner Susan Kiernan, was a demand by for £85 from her birth mother.

The fee, roughly equivalent to €3,200 today, was charged by the Sisters of Charity for a baby’s upkeep until they were adopted. When her birth mother could not afford to pay, the nuns pursued her.

A threat was made to send the child back to her.

A year after she gave birth the nuns began phoning Arnotts, where she worked as a shop assistant. A letter was sent threatening to send a money collector around.

“She would prefer not to have to do this as it might be embarrassing for you and we want to safeguard your reputation. We have not failed you. You have failed us,” it said.

Records show they were seeking money for a child who was no longer in their care. Susan had been adopted when she was just four day’s old.

While long suspected, the extent of the illegal adoption scandal only began to emerge after St Patrick’s Guild transferred its files to Tusla in 2016.

Tusla found 126 cases where children were incorrectly registered as the biological child of their adoptive parents.

Prof De Valera’s involvement is said to have come through his work as a consultant gynaecologist, where his patients included women who had difficulty conceiving.

According to the documentary, he facilitated the illegal adoptions of four children into the one household in the space of five-and-a-half years.

One of those illegally adopted, Brenda Lynch, told how she was taken from her birth mother and handed over to her adoptive mother as a newborn baby at St Brendan’s Nursing Home on Dublin’s Percy Place in the late 1950s. Her adoptive brother, Brian, became the second baby to be placed with the family in 1960.

His adoption was concealed by a fake pregnancy, with his adoptive mother again going to St Brendan’s on her pretend due date. He would later track down his birth mother, who was unmarried when she gave birth, and found out she had never even had a chance to hold him in her arms before she had to hand him over.

“She was told to get up and get out, to get dressed and leave,” he said.

The siblings were never told the truth by their adoptive mother, who feared they would face stigma if it were known they were adopted.

Mary Flanagan, another woman whose illegal adoption was said to have been facilitated by Prof de Valera, was born in March 1961. She only discovered in October 2019, after being contacted by Tusla, that she, her sister Anne and their late brother Seamus were not the biological children of the people they’d always believed to be their parents.

Ms Flanagan described the situation as surreal. “I don’t know where my roots are. All I can think is that it is like a tree falling over and there are no roots. The roots are gone. That is how I feel,” she said.

Prof De Valera is also said to have been involved in the illegal adoption by a Belfast couple of Line of Duty actor Patrick Fitzsymons. He told of how his adoptive mother was sent an appointment card for an antenatal check-up.

“She wasn’t pregnant but there you go. It was all part of the pretence,” he said.

Former Tánaiste Joan Burton, who was herself adopted, said she feared the number of people who had birth certs falsified may be much higher than current figures show.

A Green Party TD has lodged a High Court challenge against the Irish Government over a controversial international trade deal.

The Green Party's Patrick Costello lodged the challenge on Monday against the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (Ceta) between the EU and Canada.

It is understood that Mr Costello told his parliamentary party, including the leadership, on Monday evening. However, Government members had not yet been informed on Tuesday night.

Greens divided over Ceta

The Ceta deal has been a bone of contention within the Green Party for months, with TDs Neasa Hourigan and Mr Costello steadfast that they would not be voting for the deal, against which the Green Party had previously campaigned.

Climate campaigners say Ceta would hamper efforts to tackle the climate emergency because a mechanism within the deal allows for multinational companies to sue a state for damages if they introduce new laws or policies that the company thinks will reduce its future profits.

The vote on the deal has already been postponed once from its initial date in 2020 when it became clear that Green Party leader Eamon Ryan would not be able to get all of his TDs to pass the bill, despite assurances to the Taoiseach Micheál Martin he could do so.

Support for trade deals

Those in favour of passing Ceta note there is a commitment in the programme for government to support trade deals, and there is an expectation that Ceta should be ratified within that remit.

The party has been plagued with internal divisions since they entered government and have lost four councillors and are potentially poised to lose Mr Costello and Ms Hourigan if the Ceta vote, in its current form, goes ahead.

Hal a lot of people do not understand or give a fuck about this or Mercasore .In this CETA if Ireland ever bans smoking then the cigarette companies can sue for loss of profits if we ban petrol cars then petrol car makers can look for compo .In Mercasor we a country that makes meat are agreeing that South American Countries can export over a 100 thousand ton of meat duty free into the EU to compete with Irish meat makers .You wouldnt let a stranger park in your garden or decide what you can buy in the shops .We are focusing on Covid while the country is being hijacked by EU deals .You only have to look at the Vaccine Deal to know how bad the EU are at doing deals.

LEOS X BEST MATE JUST FUCKED A HAND GRENADE .TUE, 27 APR, 2021 - 11:20
PAUL HOSFORD, POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT
Former housing minister Eoghan Murphy says he has "mixed emotions" about his decision to resign his seat as a TD for Dublin Bay South.

The Fine Gael TD, who has served in the Dáil since 2011 as a TD, minister of state and as a Cabinet minister, wrote to the Ceann Comhairle this morning to confirm his resignation.

He is resigning to pursue a career in international development and said it was “a personal decision” to stand down.

His resignation will mean a by-election will need to be held in the Dublin Bay South constituency.

Speaking to the Clare Byrne show, Mr Murphy said the decision brought with it "mixed emotions" and that it was "daunting".

He said that he has spoken to Tánaiste Leo Varadkar about his resignation, but insisted that not being appointed to a ministerial brief did not colour his feelings towards his role.

"Before I was in politics, I was in international arms control and since Christmas, I've been thinking about these last 12 years in politics and I decided I wanted to get back into international politics."

Mr Murphy said that it would not be right to "take a very generous salary" to do a job that he was "not 100% committed to".

The TD said he did not have a job lined up and has "not been applying for jobs" but would do so now.

Mr Murphy said that his time in Housing had been a "challenging brief" but said that "criticism was absolutely fair".

Abuse suffered by politicians

He said that the personal abuse he had received was "tough", but said he understood if people took issue with his policy choices.

He said that a conversation was needed on the wider issue of abuse suffered by politicians, particularly women.

I understood the criticism at the time. It wasn't nice, but it was part of the job.

Mr Murphy said that an incident in last year's election campaign, which saw a homeless man injured by an industrial machine under a lampost bearing one of his posters made him "extremely angry".

"You think 'what the hell? How can one person do this to another'?"

Mr Murphy said that he had "fixed some things" but said that he "regrets" not solving the emergency accommodation crisis.

He said he had been approached by a woman whose child had not developed motor skills because of the cramped nature of hotel rooms.

He said his reaction to that was "not on my watch" but the problem was not fixed in his tenure, something which he regrets.

He said that his frustrations were with "bureaucratic hurdles" and the speed with which the State can move.

'Foot in mouth syndrome'

Mr Murphy said that his comments that co-living was "like living in a trendy boutique hotel" were "pure foot in mouth syndrome".

He said that after he made those comments he was "kicking himself".

He said that he had asked Mr Varadkar for "a breather" after last year's general election, having had a "long run" of major work. He said that he is "not unhappy" as a TD, but wants to take on another challenge.

The former minister said that he will support the Government, saying that Micheál Martin is a "good and honourable man".

Prior to entering Leinster House, Mr Murphy was elected a Dublin city councillor in 2009 for the Pembroke-Rathmines constituency.

Having served as Housing Minister in the last Dáil, he was controversially snubbed from even a junior ministerial role this time around.

In a statement, Mr Murphy said: "It has been a huge privilege to serve the Dublin Bay South constituency, first as a councillor and then as a TD.”

Leaving frontline politics is not something that I am doing without having considered the matter fully.
"In my late 20s, I worked in the UN system before I returned to Ireland to get involved alongside many other people looking to play their part in the national recovery at the time.

"And now, after 12 years of service and having reflected upon things, I have made the decision to return to international affairs.

“I have resigned my seat today, not to leave politics entirely, but to pursue a career in the area of international co-operation, human rights and democracy.

“I want to thank all who I have worked alongside in Fine Gael, in the Oireachtas, in various government departments, in Dublin City Council and numerous other agencies and bodies who serve the Irish people so well.

“It has been an honour and I wish you all every success in the future.

“I finally want to thank all in my constituency who put their faith in me so many years ago and have stood by me ever since. I will be eternally grateful.”

HAZEL CHU WILL NOW LEAVE THE GREENS AND STAND FOR THIS SEAT IN A BYELECTION .the government will need this vote and she will go greener than Kermit the frogs ballbag .OR BETTER THE GOVERNMENT WILL COLLAPSE .

He only starts work as leader tomorrow and already he is calling Leo a Cunt (I like this fella already )

The new leader of the DUP has said relationships with the Irish Government are "really, really bad" and claimed ut would "starve" the people of Northern Ireland of medicines and the food on their table.

Edwin Poots was speaking last night after he was formally ratified as leader following a lengthy meeting of the party's executive council.

He said that contact will be made with the Irish Government after he takes over from Arlene Foster tomorrow.

However, Mr Poots said that he respects Taoiseach Micheál Martin, but took aim at the Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney and the Northern Ireland Protocol.

He said they "took photographs of blown up border posts to impose upon Northern Ireland people a harshest form of customs, and an internal market that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world".

"They’re going to starve Northern Ireland people of medicines, no less, cancer drugs and other materials such as the food that’s on our table.

"And I’d say that’s a shame on the Irish Government that they done that. And that belongs to Fine Gael under the leadership of Leo Varadkar and Simon Coveney. So relationships are really, really bad with the Irish Government as a consequence," he said.
