I always make sure to do headlight alignment and that all other lights are working,if there's anything underneath that needs doin i'll let them inform me,

When i was getting my 33 yr old Citroen tested yer man (black lad) was on his back in both footwells shining his torch up the back of the dash,he spent over half an hour on the car and eventually failed it on a small bit of welding on the sill at the front and put a sticker on it to say it was too dangerous to drive.....chap that did all the welding on it shrugged his shoulders and just said he was intent on failing it.

I guess a few things could cause that, DM. Might be worth ringing (or dropping into) Howard Engineering. Owen is the boss, I doubt there's anything he doesn't know about the workings of internal combustion engines. https://www.howardengineering.ie/

I do nothing to mine for the NCT. I don't even wash it. To be honest I think it's a fantastic service and great value at €55 and €28 for a non-visual retest.... although I wish I had more confidence in their ability to find potentially dangerous faults. Many years ago my then Astra passed with a leaking rear brake cylinder and Mrs Catcher's old Fabia once passed with two broken front suspension springs.

Never bribed and inspector in my life... I treat the NCT as my cars annual inspection, if there's something that needs attention I want to know what it is so it can be rectified. I'm sure you coulda put €50 in the ashtray and got your shitebox through but in a few months you'd be replacing the CV joint as well as the boot.

Oh, I did offer a LRA inspector a drink very discreetly on one occasion... after he overlooked the fact that I was missing a decal from the rear window... but he refused it point blank.

What type of car needs a timing chain Daly?I'd be inclined to run it into the ground if it's high mileage.But what do I know.

Mercedes always had a chain but it never broke or went. Last car I heard of that had a chain was a Jap import.

I always thought incorrect oil or improper maintenance was to blame.Maybe it just needs oil..

Mercedes recommend changing it every 100,000 it seems.........no point having a chain then really.

Skoda Fabia had a chain, never changed... presumably the same across VAG 3 cylinder 1.2cc petrol engines.
