I had a FN fare going Northside last night and seen a fella hailing me on the street just before I dropped so I doubled back fer him after dropping, in he sits, mask on, 'Applegreen in Hollyhill', Oh FFS ! right beside the halting site, so as I'm doing a u-turn a Garda SUV pulls up and blocks my exit, out get the Guards and start knocking on the back passenger window asking my customer fer his name and address which he refuses to give, after 5 minutes of cajolling and threatening to take him to the station he gives his details, the Guards check them and we set off with him telling me how all the Guards are pigs and how he as a traveller has to live with this every day and how he had never done a bad deed in his life... Blah.. Blah .. Etc.. Etc...On arriving at the Applegreen, he legs it out the back door on a Tenner fare !

A tenner might not be much out of their dole, but it might be the difference between a working man making his mortgage/rent or not.

FOUR members of an extended Dublin family are facing trial for insurance claim fraud on a combined total of 60 charges.

The accused - a pensioner, a carer and two men on disability allowance - were charged following a garda investigation into alleged bogus personal injury compensation cases over several years.

Winnifred Lawrence (72), Eileen Lawrence (50), Patrick Lawrence (58) and Thomas Lawrence (21) were all granted bail when they appeared in Dublin District Court today.

Judge Treasa Kelly adjourned the cases for the preparation of books of evidence.

This morning, gardai said the DPP directed trial on indictment at the circuit court in each case and the accused could also be sent forward on a signed plea of guilty if that should arise.

Detective Garda Darren Hughes of the Garda National Economic Crime bureau said he arrested Winnifred Lawrence at Ronanstown garda station for the purpose of charge this morning.

The accused, from Moorfield Grove in Clondalkin was charged with 18 offences at 8.39am today and made no reply to any of the counts after caution.

Her charges include deception under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act and dishonestly providing information under the Civil Liabilities and Courts Act.

One charge alleges she dishonestly induced Liberty Insurance to compensate her in a personal injuries claim in the name of another, to a value of €12,460, on September 11, 2012.

Another charge on the same date states that she dishonestly gave instructions or information in relation to a personal injuries action to a named lawyer.

Winnifred Lawrence’s defence solicitor Matthew Kenny said a book of evidence would be needed for his client and she “will be taking a trial.”

She was in receipt of a pension, Mr Kenny said.

Garda Ivor Scully said he arrested Eileen Lawrence for the purpose of charge and she made no reply to her 23 charges after she was cautioned at 9.29am.

Her charges include a count of providing misleading information in an affidavit, on May 31, 2016.

Representing her, along with the other two accused, solicitor William Cadogan said Eileen Lawrence was a carer for her son.

Gda Scully said Patrick Lawrence made no reply to his 17 charges.

Patrick Lawrence’s charges include deception - dishonestly inducing IPB Insurance to compensate him in another’s name, on April 30, 2016.

He was unemployed and on disability allowance, Mr Cadogan said.

Thomas Lawrence is charged with two offences, including one count of deception by inducing IPB to compensate him in another man’s name, on September 20, 2016.

Gda Scully said Thomas Lawrence made no reply to either of his charges after caution at 9.25pm. He was also on disability allowance, Mr Cadogan said.

Judge Kelly granted bail in each accused’s own bond of €300, with no cash lodgements required. There were no garda objections to bail.

The judge also granted free legal aid after statements of the accused’s financial means were handed in by their solicitors.

The accused were all remanded on bail to May 6. Time was extended for the preparation of the books of evidence.

Woman accused of exaggerating insurance claim left clinic before consultant could see her, court hears

A woman accused of exaggerating an insurance claim over an injury left a clinic before a medical consultant could see her, a court has heard.

Mother of 16 avoids jail:

Winnifred Lawrence (69) is accused of deception after she was allegedly found by gardai to be acting “suspiciously” in the clinic.

Judge Paula Murphy adjourned the case against her at Blanchardstown District Court for the production of evidence of the nature of the alleged claim.

Ms Lawrence (69), with an address at Moorfield Grove, Clondalkin, is charged with dishonestly by deception inducing a woman to do an act “to wit believe you were another woman”, with the intention of making gain.

The offence, under Common Law, is alleged to have happened at the Blackrock Clinic, Rock Road, Blackrock, Co Dublin, on December 7, 2017.

The DPP has consented to summary disposal of the case at district court level subject to a judge accepting jurisdiction to deal with it.

Garda Sergeant Maria Callaghan had previously said it would be alleged that Ms Lawrence made a claim against RSA insurance and the firm thought it was exaggerated.

Sgt Callaghan said it would be be alleged that on December 7, 2017, Lawrence was asked by RSA to attend their doctor at The Blackrock Clinic. Sgt Callaghan said it will be alleged that RSA reported the incident to the gardai in Lucan.  She added that it would be alleged that the investigating garda attended the clinic on the day of the appointment and found Ms Lawrence to be acting suspiciously.

Judge Murphy had asked for the value of the claim and the case came back before the court today.

Sgt Callaghan said the circuit court limits on claims were between €15,000 and €60,000 but it “never got that far” as it was “intercepted prior to that.”

The judge asked if there was a medical report on the injury.

Sgt Callaghan said the accused had been requested to attend the clinic and had left before seeing a consultant.

The judge said she wanted to see a copy of the nature of the claim before considering jurisdiction.

She further adjourned the case and remanded the defendant on continuing bail to appear in court again on February 21.

Just to give some balance here I will add a few positive traveller stories. I carry a traveller couple the odd time, no problems with them and they always tip me. Another encounter with travellers lately, fare was 15 euro, they gave me 50 euro.

The worst customers I have encountered over the years were wealthy so called respectable people.

Some people would feel better being ripped off by David Drumm or Denis O'Brien than a traveller. :-\
